Lobos, surf spot in Fuerteventura

Updated: October 2026

Lobos is a right that peels along the west coast of Lobos island, a small uninhabited islet off the northeast of Fuerteventura, opposite Corralejo. It is one of the longest waves in the Canary Islands: several hundred metres when the swell lines up.

It breaks over sharp lava reef covered in sea urchins and demands a good level: fast take-off, hollow sections and long paddles. You get there by boat from Corralejo, which makes it a session apart.

Lobos surf spot (Fuerteventura)

According to Surfnerd, Lobos is a right-hand point break over sharp lava reef that can peel for about 400 m. It works with a west to northeast swell, ideally north, of about 0.9 to 2.4 m, with an offshore east wind. The Surf Atlas describes a fast wave with walls and barrels, half a kilometre long or more.

Sources keep it for experienced surfers, and The Surf Atlas for pros. Tide matters little: it works at all tides, with a preference for the rising tide according to Surfnerd. Getting in and out over the rock is tricky: booties recommended.

When to surf Lobos?

The season runs from autumn to spring with north swells. Winter is the most consistent period. In summer, easterly winds can chop the wave up, although it sometimes works.

Beginners: not for you

Sharp reef, fast wave and boat access: Lobos is not a place to learn. Go to Flag Beach, or El Cotillo in summer.

Intermediates: not yet

Even in small swells the wave is fast and you get out over the rock. Practise at Rocky Point, in front of Corralejo.

Experienced surfers: the long right

With a clean north swell and an east wind, it is one of the longest rights in the Canary Islands. Shortboard recommended, a gun when it is big, and respect the locals.
