Ribeira d’Ilhas is the most iconic intermediate-to-advanced surf spot in Ericeira. A reef break on a mixed sand-and-rock bottom, it serves up a long, clean right-hander that can hold for 200 metres on a good day. Former WSL World Tour stop for years, this is where you come to progress on a quality wave in Portugal. More committed than Foz do Lizandro, but far more accessible than Coxos. For the expert version 1 km north, check Coxos: https://travel-surf.com/spot/coxos/.
Ribeira d’Ilhas spot characteristics
Ribeira d’Ilhas sits 2 km north of Ericeira village, a 5-minute van ride from the centre. The horseshoe-shaped bay is bordered by cliffs and the wave breaks on a shallow reef on the north side. It is a long, powerful right, sometimes paired with a secondary left when the swell turns due north. When to surf Ribeira d’Ilhas
The best window: September to April. That is when North Atlantic swells deliver 1.5 to 3 m sets, perfect for working the main right. October-November is often the quality peak with a great mix of size and offshore wind. Summer: Ribeira runs small (0.5 to 1 m), fine for late-stage intermediates but without the winter punch.

Who is Ribeira d’Ilhas for?
Beginners: no
The reef and the power of the wave put it out of beginner territory. If you are looking for first sessions in Ericeira, head to Foz do Lizandro, which is built for that.
Intermediates: yes, this is THE spot
Ribeira d’Ilhas is the wave to push past intermediate. The right is long, the face readable, sections give you time to land several manoeuvres on a single wave. If you can already pop up and trim down a wall, this is where you actually learn to surf. Aim for 1.5 to 2 m days for optimal comfort.
Advanced: yes, full playground
When the swell tops 2.5 m, Ribeira becomes a powerful and committed wave: barrels possible on the inside, fast sections, critical take-offs. Advanced surfers work cutbacks, floaters and sometimes barrels on aligned days. For something more committed, head up to Coxos when conditions hit hard.
How to get to Ribeira d’Ilhas

On site: a restaurant at the top of the parking (great view of the sets), public showers, board and wetsuit rental nearby (count 25 € for the half-day pack). Most Ericeira surf camps shuttle their intermediate students here daily.

4/3 mm wetsuit outside summer, 3/2 mm from June to September. Performance shortboard 5’10” to 6’4″ for intermediates and advanced, or hybrid if the swell is small. Avoid foam boards (incompatible with paddle distance and reef).
