Peniche is the most exposed peninsula on mainland Portugal, a cluster of spots that turn 360° depending on wind and swell. While Baleal Norte rolls out school waves for beginners, Supertubos sends World Surf Tour-grade barrels just 3 km away. You can spend a week here, surf 5 different days on 5 different spots without ever moving your car. Here are the best surf camps in Peniche for 2026, with spots, seasons and prices in € for beginners and intermediates.
Why pick a surf camp in Peniche?
Peniche works as a two-sided peninsula. On the north side, Baleal and its wind-protected beaches host beginners year-round. On the south side, Praia da Cantinho da Baia and Supertubos take Atlantic swells head-on. The result is a cluster you rarely find elsewhere in Europe: depending on the day’s weather, your instructor picks the zone that works best for your level, never driving more than 10 minutes. To compare with the country’s other strengths, check out our 5 reasons to plan a surf trip in Portugal.
Add to that water between 15 and 20 °C depending on the season (3/2 mm wetsuit in summer, 4/3 mm in winter), a peninsula full of fish restaurants, surf shops and accommodation at every price point, and Lisbon airport 1h15 by road. Local surf schools run at full speed between April and November, with two peaks: June (still calm) and September (first big swells). When to surf in Peniche?
May to June: the best window for a beginner surf camp in Peniche
Moderate swell (0.8 to 1.5 m), water warming up to 16-18 °C, crowd still reasonable. Baleal Norte breaks clean, Praia do Baleal Sul becomes surfable even on small days. Best window for a first surf trip if you want to progress without getting smashed. To compare with other Portuguese options for beginners, also see our guide on beginner surf in Portugal: the easiest beach breaks.
“I went surfing in Baleal for 5 days in May a few years ago. I loved the spot. Easy, few people in the water, and waves super accessible for beginners compared to the French Landes coast. Plus there are nice little bars on the beach.”
July-August: surf camp Peniche in peak season (beginners welcome)
Water rises to 19-20 °C, a shorty is enough. Waves stay small to medium (0.5 to 1.2 m at Baleal), perfect for beginners, more frustrating for intermediates. Surf camps fill up, you pay 20 to 30% more than in May. Book three months ahead, especially for the mid-July to mid-August weeks.
September-October: the best window for an intermediate surf camp in Peniche
The first autumn swells arrive (1 to 2 m steady), water still at 18-19 °C, summer tourists are gone. Cantinho da Baia wakes up, Praia da Lagide turns on, sessions get longer. Supertubos starts firing barrels for the advanced. This is the favourite season of instructors and Peniche regulars.
November to March: surf camp Peniche for advanced surfers
2 to 4 m swells, sometimes more. Supertubos enters its full season (the World Surf Tour ran here in late October), Cantinho da Baia goes double overhead. Beginners stay at Baleal Norte (the peninsula shields it from the big west swells). 4/3 mm wetsuit required, water at 14-16 °C. Many surf camps close or run at half-speed from December to February.

What else to do besides surfing?

And if you want to extend your trip, the surf cluster of Ericeira is 50 minutes south with its own surf camps and spots (Foz do Lizandro, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Coxos).
“From Peniche you can do a nice day road trip up to the fortified village of Óbidos and try the famous cherry liqueur. We also went to Nazaré for the day and visited the museum facing the XXL wave of Nazaré. When we went it was small, for Nazaré, and there was a bodyboard contest. The vibe is pretty cool. You can find affordable restaurants too.”
